Farm House

Hampshire

Once a part of Stratton Park and formally owned by the 5th Duke of Bedford, this Grade II listed Farmhouse has an extensive history. Our clients acquired this property with the aim to renovate the house and gardens working in conjunction with ourselves and architect Ian Adam Smith.

The approach to the house was dark and enclosed, thus our main focus was to soften the driveway and create a smooth transition from the shade, into the brighter, sunnier front of the house. In turn, this changed the view from within the house, out onto a more delicate combination of greenery and gravel, instead of tarmac.

With an existing orchard in place, we set about revitalising this space by removing diseased trees and adding new fruit varieties, as well as creating a meadow with perennial wildflowers to attract wildlife. Mown pathways now provide space to wander through the trees and flowers.

The driveway that could be seen from the West facade was removed, to give way to new sweeping borders around the house. An enclosed courtyard area was formed by the boot room providing a perfect spot for morning coffee with views across the orchard.

An old barn to the East of the house gives way to a path lined with soft flowing ornamental grasses and pleached Hornbeam trees, leading to the swimming pool area.

A productive garden was also created and fruit espaliers introduced to clothe the brick walls.

A new garden room was added to the back of the house together with a Yorkstone terrace. Leading out from the kitchen, this has become the perfect space for family meals and entertaining with lovely views over the lawn, kitchen garden and full herbaceous borders.
